Research :Andrew Goodwin's theory

'Dancing in the Distraction Factory' (1993)

Andrew Goodwin didn't think the traditional narrative analyses applied to pop videos as they approached narrative from a different angles compared to novels and films.Andrew Goodwin had  a few reasons for the different narrative structure such as:
  • Pop videos are built around songs and don't usually pose traditional narrative structures
  • pop videos uses the singers for both narrative and as a character
  • the singer often looks at the camera
Andrew Goodwin also says pop videos uses repetition by repeating images in the way the song repeats the chorus or lines.

Andrew Goodwin says threes three types of relations between songs and videos:

  1. illustration, where the video tells the story of the lyrics.

A

2.    Amplification, where the video intrudes new meaning but does contradict with the lyrics.

3.    Disjuncture , where there are little connection between the lyrics and the video.
