Creating my main Font/Logo for Fleek E - Lady Pearl

Creating my logo - Kizoa Online Movie Maker

I am very happy with the outcome of this font because it was truly not as straight forward as it looks! I will be using this on my website and digipak too.

50) Short list of Fonts, colours layout and Design ideas - Lady Pearl

Blog Post 52 - Do's and Dont's of design work.

Do's

  • Only use two fonts maximum, they have relate to the genre of your artist (grime). i also have to ensure they are sized correctly.
  • Three colours maximum (white, black and gold), links back to artists clothing in music video/photos.
  • Make sure photo resolution is good so pictures are clear, have to be the right size for digipak and make sure photos are appropriate for display.
  • Rule of thirds for composition
  • Make sure to include: barcode, date, copyright information, title of the album, artist name, record company logo, website and artist website.

Dont's

  • Go over the top in regards to photoshop, simple/necessary effects, must relate to genre.
  • No stretched images, if an image is incorrect size retake the photo.
  • Cover the artists face with text
  • Overuse photos to fill space, only use when necessary.

changes in the costume

We stuck to our main costume design ideas that we had in the pitch. But we did have some changes as some of our costume ideas was ambitious as they were pricey. We got rid of our initial idea of wearing a crown in the video as we was unable to get a crown as the one we wanted was going to take a long period of time to come. we also had to scrap the idea of having our own brand imagery of our artist name being on her tops and hats as we unable to purchase it also down to money and didn't have the right resources in achieving this look our-self.
we did stick to our man idea of wearing all black and all white and our artist had a cap in her house that was featured throughout. We also was able to find the earrings really heap that as a group we was all able to cheap in for.
We had several different costume changes as we thought it would be clearer if every time we was in a different location our artist changed her costume. Which made it easier when structuring our music video.

Reflection of the music video

As a whole the music video was a success and everyone enjoyed it and we got positive feedback. In the making of the music video it was very stressful as we had to keep changing things in the editing process and time caught up to us and was unable to re-shooting certain parts in making the music video even better.

As a group we thought our first rough cut went very well. We got positive and negative feedback from our teachers and peers as they felt there wasn't much structure to the video. We then went on to taking  on their feedback to making our music video even better. As a group we was so please with the footage we achieved and was finding it hard to let go of some of the footage, i feel this was blocking us from having the best structure. So after the third rough cut our group sat down and planned what we're going to keep and let go. After having this clear plan made it easier in structuring our video. The first scene was in the car park then the choruses was the green screen and dance scene footage. Our second scene was the trickiest scene for us as our artist wasn't as strong lyrically so we was finding it hard to find good shots for the best lip sync. So in order to achieve the best results we decided to combine two base tracks in one verse as the artist was stronger in certain parts of each. Our last scene was with the black and gold back drop which we found was the strongest lyrically but did lack close ups. The last chorus of the song is a bridge so we decided to refer back to the base tracks that we used throughout the song.

I was extremely please with the green screen editing as it went perfectly to plan and as a group we received a good response. We was able to achieve our ambitious idea successfully of our dancer falling off our artist shoulder as well as the lyrics behind the artist.

Our music video stuck to our main idea in the pitch which makes the music video a success all the way through.

Social media

As we are appealing to a younger audience we decided to have a Twitter and an Insta as they are widely used by the younger generation. We made it look as realistic as possible by posting regularly and keeping our fans up to date by posting what we did on each film day and when its going to be released.

Blog Post 48 - Ancillary text 1 (digipak)

Krept and Konan - The Long Way Home

The central image on the cover of this album is the two artists either side of a long road with a burning car on the right hand side. this relates to their album as it is called 'The Long Way Home'. this image is the only image used throughout the digipak. The ratio of image to text is mainly image compared to minimal text.

We can also see the album name at the bottom of the image in red.

On the back of the album cover we have the track list with the title of the album again featured at the top. we have the same image in the background except the artists are not featured. the colour of the font is white for the song names and gold for the name of the featured artists. the album title is also in red again similarly to the the front cover. a colour scheme is maintained as the chain is the same colour as the font on the back.

The CD again has the same image that is seen throughout the album however it has small white text on the edge of the of the CD.

The colour scheme is maintained throughout the digipak, synergy is seen as the logo of their clothing line is seen on the road sign and on their chains. The album title is actually a song on the album (the long way home)

JME - Integrity

The cental image on the cover of this album is a close up of the artist face. this obviously promotes the artist and when people that know the genre see his face they'll know who it is. Similarly to the previous album, this is the only image used throughtout the album. the ratio of image to text is all image and no text on the album cover. the title of the album is not mentioned on the album cover.

On the back of the album is the tracklist which is in a gold font and it takes up the whole cover, the background of the album cover is in white. in a smaller font at the bottom we can see the list of featuring artists and producers.

I don't have an image of the CD but it is the same of the album cover (the face of the artist). The album name is actually a song on the album (integrity). synergy is used in the song 'Test Me' on the album as in the music video, the people in the background are wearing masks with the artists face on it similar to the album cover.
There is no institutional information found on the album. the colour scheme is white and gold which is also synergy, in the video for the song 'Work' the artist is standing in front of a white background for majority of the video.

Overall, both of these digipaks are similar in many ways as they are both from the same genre. however, because most artists from the grime genre are not big in terms of popularity, they tend to resort to other ways of promoting their music rather than a digipak as their budget isn't as big as artists from the pop genre for example.

44) Outline of improvements - Lady Pearl

Our main issue is to think about the structure of the music video a bit more carefully, as we have some internal and external shots within the same verse, so it looked quite disorganised and random. What we've now decided to do is:

1st Verse: Use the carpark shots

2nd Verse: Pink Blue and purple graffiti with the Shoreditch box graffiti

3rd Verse: Use the Silver, Gold and Black graffiti

1st, 2nd and 3rd Chorus: Green screen shots with the dancers, the group of boys singular, brushing off the shoulder and also the night time shoot with Fleek E dressed in all white

Outro: A compilation of different shots

Rough cut 1

Day 2 of filming - 10/11/15

during today's filming session, we filmed in Shoreditch and we found several graffiti walls to film infront of. one of which had a crown on it which fits in perfectly with the brand image of the artist.

Day 3 of filming - 12/12/2015

During this filming session, we filmed several green screen clips with the artist as well as having a group of people behind the artist. we also filmed in the dance studio and at the angel compound.

Rough Cut 1 Feedback

17. Analysis of song choice original video

Paigey Cakey - Same Way

Our song choice is Same Way by Paigey Cakey, a female british rapper who does grime and hip hop.
the original video for Same Way featuring her, includes a large white open space with her performing alongside other cameo artists such as Chipmunk and Wretch 32 and another shot with a group of friends. We will be using the element of groups in our video also. Throughout the whole video this white space is used and no other location. Our video will be set in more than one location, this will be the major change in our video that will make it differ to the original. We will also being following the use of an overlay in the beginning

Substituting the Dance studio for Green screen - Lady Pearl

An insightful decision

On Thursday the 12th November filmed inside the dance studio for the shot with Fleek E and an even bigger group of guys and girls dressed in all black behind her. We filmed this on Cherelle's phone as a trial run but unfortunately the performance including some of the people in the background not turn out the way we intended it to, and we wanted all of our base tracks to look as professional as possible. As a result of this, we are going to substitute the dance studio base-track with the extra shots we filmed with the group of boys in dancing behind Cherelle in the Green screen. Phew! Sorted :)

In the photo above, we see Fleek trying to help choreograph some movements, which did not exactly go according to plan!

Day 3 - Green Screen / Angel Compund / Dance Studio 12/11/2015

Here we gathered as many people possible and got them to dress in all black for our other base-tracks. We have the single dancer Emeka, for his single green screen shoot and other groups of people to add to the urban set.

Reflection of Day 3 filming - Lady Pearl

Filming for the Green Screen

So in our story board we came up with quite a few areas that could potentially include Green Screen, and so today was the day that we'd put all of our talk into practice!

The main focuses in our Green Screen:
1) Close up Shots of Fleek E for Synergy
-We wanted extreme close up shots for of her eyebrows, eyes, lips and eyelashes as we all incorporated these in our individual digipaks

2) Single shots Of Fleek E doing the dance
- The origin of the same way dance! We want to show the artist brushing off the haters all by herself, hopefully if the shot is repeated enough throughout the music video, all of Fleek E's fans/followers and the general public will catch on with the dance!

3) Emeka - Our dancer
Now we decided to encorperate a very talented friend of ours to show of his skills in our music video, and he sure delivered exactly what we thought he would! THANK YOU EMEKA! :) (even though you'll never read this blog)

4) The Brusher (Fleek E) vs the Brushee (Emeka)

Michella and creative intelligence came up with the idea of filming Emeka dance and eventually editing him down in size so that he can land on Fleek E (the BrushER)'s shoulder, and then as Fleek E does the movement where she brushes off the haters, Emeka (the BrushEE) as the supposed 'hater' would then tumble off of her shoulder and we would then see his body floating through the air

5) Group of boys dancing/turning up in the back ground

I thought it would be smart to film group 7 as they agreed to being in it anyway! But to film them behind her as a big group of guys because I'm not sure if we will still be able to shoot the same crowd of people in the dance studio as many drama an dance groups were also rehearsing.
This was done in 2 takes! Great job guys, many thanks!

6) Buy em in two's
We filmed Mel and Emeka, two brilliant dancers together cutting shapes so that we could have a variety of dance shots. These shots also came in very handy for a very brief line in verse two were Fleek E says "Buy em in two's" -we plan on cutting to the shot of the two of them dancing :)

After all the green screen stuff had been done, we moved to the Angel Compound:

Here we had 3 dancers dressed in all black whilst Fleek E was centre of attention in all white. We initially wanted more than 3 people but we managed to work with what we had and we placed them in a diamond formation so it looked almost intentional! Also, to be fair, Fleek E does say in the first verse "I've got a tight circle" - meaning she has a small group of friends, and we demonstrated exactly that! We filmed three base tracks here and also managed to get a lot of shots were Fleek E and we dancers were all moving in sync - as they should be! The colour contrasts in this shot are very nice and not like the others we've filmed as it is in the evening time so it adds a cooler vibe to it B)

All shots in Angel compound panned around the dancers and followed their movements skilfully without moving too much on every line

Day 2 Shoot - Shoreditch Graffitti 10/11/2015

We went on the look out for graffiti backdrops in Shoreditch. Luckily we found a backdrop that completely fit our colour scheme and synergy 'black, white and gold' and also with a crown on the top. We also went on to find another backdrop with a crown on it.

Females in Grime

As part of my research I decided to look into Female Grime as a theme and explore the different things I found online. I think its fair to say that female grime is very much less commercialised in comparison to male grime artists, which is why we were so keen on doing a female grime music video. Also with females in the music industry there is a large amount of sex appeal incorporated in the production of their music videos and posters - our group want to subvert these stereotypes and have Fleek E just doing her own thing and people loving her for her personality and most importantly - talent before anything else

Here I have compiled different links of web reports and blogs on Female Grime and also different links to female grime artists music videos and freestyles. Enjoy!

Reflection of Day 2 filming - Lady Pearl

Today we filmed in Shoreditch. We filmed in Brick Lane because it is known best for its iconic graffiti locations and hipster/urban ambience.

We filmed in front of 3 different exterior graffiti backdrops:

1) Silver, Gold and black Elephants
2) box graffiti on the stairs
3) pink blue and purple graffiti

- Silver,Gold and black Elephants
Here we filmed almost every shot static. We filmed 3 low angle shots. One from the left, one from the right and the one dead centre. We did this so that we can make it look like the camera was moving from right to left during the jump cuts. After that we filmed once with slightly more movement in order to get more dancing shots and to Coke much close to Fleek E as all of the others were profile shots that were quite a bit of a distance away

2) box graffiti on the stairs
Now we weren't originally going to film on these steps but I had an image of how perfect it could potentially be for the music video, so I decided to film one base track here - mainly as a test because nobody really understood my vision- which was fine! But also because it really smelt and we wanted to get out of there as quickly as possible!

The Pink, blue and Purple graffiti
Here Michella filmed one base track as we were literally on our way back but thought it was a perfect backdrop for our synergy as the graffiti contained a crown, just like all of our digipak drafts and also the previous black gold and silver backdrop. This shot had continuous skilled camerawork which also correlated with the dance movements. Funnily enough, we gained quite an audience whilst filming this base track with a lot of people wanting to know what exactly we were doing! One man asked for more information on Fleek E so that he knows about her before the rest of the world does, but it's a bit too late for that.. ;) #FleekENation
Everyone who did not walk through the video shoot whilst we filmed actually said some really positive feedback and continued to comment on how good of a performer Fleek E is! We all knew that...

Reflection of the Blogging health Check

Lady Pearl, you still have a very strong blog with 36 posts but, as we have moved in to the planning stages, many of the excellent aspects of your blogging noted in the previous health check have been used less frequently. Please read through strengths and weaknesses below and complete the to do list at the bottom in order to ensure that your mark returns back into level 4, which is where is should be!
Strengths:
- most tasks complete for planning
weaknesses:
- time management - your frequency of posting to the blog has become more sporadic as you have moved into the planning stages
- consistency in detail - the planning blogs do not reflect the level of detail seen in your early blogging tasks
- use of ICT - again, less use of ICT is evident than in your earlier tasks which is a pity
- care in presentation - black text on black background makes some posts difficult to read
to do / targets:
- improve frequency of posting aiming to post at least 4 times (every other day) weekly
- improve the level of detail in your posts with greater reflection in what you say and detail in your use of ICT (look at your research posts - they are brilliant and set a benchmark of what you are capable of producing)
- use of ICT - as above point!
- change the black font to white (or another lighter colour) so your posts can be read more clearly

Filming reflection- day 1- 5th november

We filmed the car park scene in an underground car park near college.
This was a successful shoot as we were able to film more than 5 basetracks and even get some setting shots to use as extras.
The costume chosen for the artist went well with the location as it matched the blue lighting that was in the car park.
The original choice to film the car park scene was Westfield Stratford centre car park but we chose the angel one because it was closer, and had nicer lighting and was also very exclusive and unknown to the public. This meant that we had no interruptions and were able to film more and quickly.

Reflection of Day 1 filming - Lady Pearl CARPARK

November 5th 2015

Our first filming session went great! We went to our very first location which was the car park and filmed 5+ different base tracks. We started off doing tracking shots going through the car park following Fleek E as she performed. We then got some static wide shots of her standing in one place- performing in the car park space and we did this over and over until we had medium close-up, profile and a close-up shots to work with.

After that we went on to film little things we can add in between the beginning flicker of the first 16 counts of the music video. We got tilting/panning shots of Fleek E just standing in the car park as the camera reaches her and she appears. We also got shots of her dancing in the blue light and kicking a puddle so, in the editing process, we can see what will be most effective to use.

Another plus was being able to use a BMW in the filming, which gave off more of an impression that Fleek E is a self-made millionaire.
